010: Easter Saturday!

Easter Parade: 23 April 2011
A special Easter parade was held on the 23rd of April, Saturday, during the Holy Weekend for the Year 5 Primers. This parade included cohort drill, Easter games and a time of worship and Christian fellowship during the CE session.

Nick, you should really comb your hair..

After the morning fall-in, us Year 5s had a short cohort drill session. In this session, the entire Year 5 Primers cohort was seen marching around the parade square as one, learning new drill movements as well as refining the movements for the previously learnt commands. While the drill session was tiring for many, everyone had a good time doing drill together.

The Easter games were organized by Clt/5 Sophia Ng and her committee, held after the morning drill session. The games saw the Year 5s breaking up into groups and going around to various locations in the school, where stations were set up for the groups to complete. The games were all Easter themed, with the “grand prize” being an Easter egg itself! These games proved to not only be fun and entertaining, but also provided an opportunity for the Year 5s to get to know one another better through fellowship.
A clue! A clue!

Check out those moves... lalala

After the conclusion of the Easter games, the Year 5 Primers gathered back together for a time of CE in the lecture theatre. Following a meaningful session of worship, our officer Mr Lee Yi Wei shared with us Primers on the importance of working together as a cohort throughout our Primers’ term, and how we should continue to uphold each other in love, praying and supporting each other throughout our journey in Primers and in IB as well. Following that, we were split up into three smaller clusters for bible study, under Mr Hong Lee Kiat, Mr Caleb Lin and Ms Petrina Liam.
CE session saw us praying for each other :D

Personally, I feel that this parade was a meaningful and fruitful one, as throughout the various activities, the Year 5 Primers had many opportunities for bonding and fellowship, which definitely brought us closer together as a cohort. The extended CE session, with worship and bible study, also allowed us to reflect and thank God for His love and mercies in our lives, especially during this period of time where we remember the sacrifice of love that was given to us by our Heavenly Father.

009: Primers Handover Parade 2011

Primers Handover Parade 2011: 16 April 2011

Outgoing Steering Committee and Officers

The Primers’ handover was a truly a magnificent and memorable experience for every Primer, both outgoing and incoming. It was as though we truly felt the weight of responsibility slowly build up on our shoulders. Indeed, it was a wonderful start to our term as the Primers of the Boys’ Brigade 12(I) Company.

 Incoming Steering Committee

Carissa and JAYNE CHIANG!!!

The day started off as it normally would on a typical Saturday Parade, yet it felt so different – a whole lot more excitement, anxiety and anticipation welled up within each of us. After fall-in, cohort time was basically a rehearsal for the Handover Parade, given the little time we had, we could not even squeeze in a full rehearsal with the Year 6s, but this led us to more excitement of what is to come ahead during the Handover Parade.

 HO JUN KIAT!!!!!
Incoming Year 2 Program Chairman

 Incoming Vice-head Primer Thaddaeus Tan

Worship was first in our indoor programmes, led by the Year 6 Primers. It was such an awesome time of worship as the whole Company united together in songs of praise and prayer and indeed God was present at this time, drawing each of our hearts closer to Him and even closer to each other, not just to be united as a cohort, but the whole Company as one. Next, we had a time of sharing and testimonies from our beloved Year 6s. This emotional hour and a half truly led us to recall and appreciate all that our dear seniors have done for the Company. Through the presentations they performed, and the words that they shared, all could see the strong bonds of love between each other within that cohort and their juniors, the year 3s. This inspired all of us, as the incoming batch of Primers to hold the reins of the Company’s leadership, to follow their footsteps and strive to greater heights, with God as our centre and love as the basis for all things that we may do.
Incoming Drill and Discipline Chairman: Gabriel Loke

Soon enough, they much anticipated Handover Parade finally began. Each Primer within the Year 5 cohort felt a sense of excitement as we formed up at the Parade Grounds. Looking over to the Year 6s opposite us relishing the last moments of them wearing the Primers Uniform, recalling the year that has gone past, we all felt the full extent of the importance and significance of this occasion. Then it all passed so quickly, yet every moment will be forever etched deeply in our hearts and minds. First, the steering committees both incoming and outgoing marched forward, followed by the both cohorts. Here, the most significant part of the day had come, we broke our ranks and files and spent time praying powerfully for each other, blessing and encouraging each other across the two cohorts. As each word was uttered, and each person dedicated to God, we all felt the weight of our shoulders increasing as we slowly accepted our appointment as Primers, to lead and guide the Company in accordance to God’s will and righteousness. But all too quickly, it was time for the Year 6s to depart.

Another picture of Carissa? This is too much already..

As we heard them commanding their last command, and marching their last march as Primers of the Boys’ Brigade, we solemnly acknowledged in our hearts the contributions they have done, promising ourselves to lead like they led and to bring the Company to greater heights and stronger love with God and each other. Then we too marched off after being accepted by the Company as Primers, emotions filled our hearts as we prepared to make our term as Primers an awesome one, hand in hand and heart to heart, we as a cohort accepted this huge responsibility.

Ephesians 6:16-18

"In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints"

008: Prehandover Retreat!

Pre-Handover Retreat 2011: 15th April 2011

On the 15th of April, we held a Pre-Handover Retreat that was aimed to let us have loads of fun even as we dedicated our Primers Term to God.

Beginning on Friday afternoon, we participated in a bunch of really whacky games organized by Primer Alex Goh. They involved lots of random stuff like passing water through straws and mimicking certain embarrassing personal activities. In the end, all the groups had to work together to piece together a picture of “Mickey Mouse Club”. Strange, but terribly fun!

We then proceeded for a rather (un)healthy dinner arranged by Primers David Teh and Adi, who brought for us Butter Glorious Chicken! Happily munching away our dinner, we even celebrated Dorothy’s birthday with a cake!

After that was Committee Time, when we all grouped together in our little committees and prayer for each other, shared about our own lives or just enjoyed each other’s company, remembering that although we often met up for the purpose of planning projects and camps, we were first and foremost brothers and sisters who serve each other as the body of Christ.
Mr Lin then led us in a time of worship, before giving us a short talk about his life, and how it is important to trust God even though things in the short-term may not seem cool. He then gave each of us little pretty certificates personalized with our name and job. It was heartwarming to see the whole cohort clapping and cheering for each Primer as his/her name was called and he/she went to the front to receive the cert. It was apt that we then went for a time of CE Group sharing and discussion as we encouraged each other within our CE groups.

The rest of the night was a flurry of hyperness. Buoyed by the smell of Adi preparing his ice milo, we did a quick run-through of the Handover Parade under the cover of darkness, and amidst several mistakes and retries, eventually got the hang of things. Sort of.

And then was Adi’s ice milo. After drinking that, the rest of the night was a blur.

The next day, however, was pretty simple and calm; we had sunrise worship next to the Astroturf, before being chased away by the fumigation to the Spaceframe for breakfast. After a quick clean-up, change of uniform and uniform inspection, we were ready for our Handover Parade!

007: Enrolment Service and Parade

Enrolment Service and Parade: 9 April 2011

Parade Segment

On the 9th of April 2011, we were officially enrolled into the 12th company! This was formally carried out through the enrolment parade and service held at ACS Barker Road.

The enrolment parade was a combined parade for the 12th company, comprising of ACS Barker, ACS Primary, ACS Junior, ACJC and ACSI. Much effort was put into it through the three dry runs from the previous Saturday and another three on the morning of the 9th. For those of us who took part in the parade as Key Appointment Holders or contingent members, all the practice in the hot sun and humid weather definitely paid off in the end, for the parade ran as smoothly as planned. Our Primers’ drill was at top standard as the contingent went through the march pass with sharply coordinated marching and smart salutes. I am also proud to mention my and CLT/5 Thaddaeus Tan’s commanding, as the stick orderlies could be heard clearly over the band!

Before we knew it the parade was over and we were proceeding to the chapel for our enrolment service. We had a wonderful session of worship and sermon, where we learnt to just look to the Lord and trust in Him for what is to come through our service. After this, we were asked to stand before everyone and give our dedications to the company. Standing up and saying those vows of service as one, many of us felt a strong sense of unity and belonging and also a thrill of excitement to finally be officially enrolled.

From this day onwards, we would be expected to uphold the values of true Christian manliness and serve God through our responsibilities, a task that is certainly no small feat. But together as one cohort, and with God’s grace and guidance, I know there’s just so much we’re going to achieve! Let us commit ourselves to Him through our Primers journey in the 12th, for He alone knows what great and amazing plans lie ahead for us!

Sanctuary Ushering

As the sanctuary ushers, our main duty was to usher the parents to their seats and to facilitate the passing of the offering bags. Most of us have never done ushering for church before, so getting to pass the offering bags around was a rather novel experience- the Year 6s even managed to devise this cool way of passing the offering bags around, and that made the experience all the more special. Before the service segment, we also helped to direct parents to the parade grounds. It was rather amusing- that awkward moment when you tell parents where to go then they just turn off and walk to somewhere else, or the moment where parents walk past us right while we are engaged in our usual shenanigans (in most occasions we managed to spot them and scramble to look prim and proper just in time, thank God).

Before the rehearsal for the service segment, God blessed us with a pocket of time to hold an ad hoc prayer meeting. I’m really glad for the opportunity to be able to share our burdens with another and to encourage and pray for one another. Ultimately, while the experience allowed us to serve the company and the parents, it was also a good time of fellow-shipping with one another in the presence of God!

Parade Square Ushering

9th April marked one of the most important events in the entire BB calendar for 2011—the Enrollment Parade! It was an early day for most of us as we gathered at ACS (Barker Road) at 8am to assemble and go through the entire parade rehearsal. As ushers, we had to familiarize ourselves with our various positions and ensure that we would be able to perform our duties later in the afternoon.

As I stood near the tennis courts ushering parents to sit down and watch the parade, it was evident from the smiles that they were extremely excited and proud to be watching their child take part in the parade. From little toddlers watching their siblings in the parade to grandparents watching their grandsons and parents snapping pictures away, their joy and excitement was indeed evident. As ushers, we were not actually involved in the marching, but from our respective positions, a few of us were able to watch the entire parade. It was inevitable to feel a sense of admiration and respect for the Primers marching contingent that stood still, under the burning rays of the sun. The experience of ushering was also a great one as we felt a sense of achievement at guiding and directing lost parents. All in all, I am sure that every usher felt that ushering at the enrollment parade was a satisfying experience since it is crucial for ushers to lead the way and ensure the smooth transition when parents move from the tennis courts to the sanctuary.

Overall Ushering Evaluation

I had a wonderful day today and I hope all of you did too! Even though we were not part of the parade, we still were very important as each of our small roles contributed to the bigger picture and smooth flow of things. I hope all of you have learned something from the day's experiences: be it in terms of communicating with random strangers ("good afternoon sir/madam, are you here for the 57th Boys' Brigade Enrolment....?") or raising the courage to approach strangers and parents.

Indeed this has been a very interesting experience for me too: training leadership abilities, making decisions on the spot, allocating manpower and practicing instantaneous creative problem solving. Thank you all for being so co-operative and willing to usher. I was able to remain cheerful, positive and enthusiastic throughout because I knew all you fantastic ushers were capable, supportive and co-operative.

Dear Year 5s, as you can see this has truly been a GREAT start to what our cohort can do! See! We just played a huge part in the organizing of a MAJOR event on the 12th company's calendar of events for the year with a really smooth ushering throughout. And to the dear Year 6s who were ushering, thank you too for your help and leadership abilities! I will continue to look up to all of you as CAPABLE leaders and role models for us.

I am sorry I was unable to give you guys a debrief or anything or thank all of you personally for serving as ushers, but the comments was that all of you guys did a GREAT job, so go reward yourself with ice cream from the fridge or something. So yup, thanks for reading thus far and I look forward to working with all of you again in the future! :D

~ Happy 57th Enrolment Service and Parade day! ~

Thank you and God bless!

006: Enrolment Service and Parade Rehearsal

Enrolment Service Rehearsal Parade: 2 April 2011

Ushers

After flag raising and company fall in, we as ushers were basically shown around the school compound of Anglo-Chinese School (Barker) by CLT/5 Nicholas Lim. We were also introduced to the different stops along the route that parents will take on the day of the actual enrolment service and parade. Following that, there was a drill session for us where we learnt and executed basic stationary and marching drills.

Some of the ushers.

 More ushers.

Through the “tour” around the school compound, I got to know and became more familiar with the places in Anglo-Chinese School (Barker) especially the stops we will be assigned to usher parents during the actual enrolment service and parade. On the other hand, through the drill session, I got the chance to have an enjoyable time learning and executing drills whilst exercising discipline at the same.

As a whole, time was well spent during the rehearsal for the enrolment service and parade as we as ushers got to know the various stops that we will be assigned to during the actual enrolment service and got the chance to carry out a small drill session for ourselves.

Parade Segment

On the 2nd of April 2011, we had our first Enrolment Parade Rehearsal. It was a hot day, though the weather did cool down slightly after some time. We started off the parade with attendance taking, before moving to the auditorium for a refreshing time of worship and sharing by the Captain of the 12(BR) Singapore Company. We then moved on to rehearse for the Enrolment Parade. It was very tiring for all of us, as we had to repeat the movements several times, and we had to rehearse the entire parade over and over again before we were dismissed.

 Service Rehearsal

Overall, I felt that by the end of the day, we were mostly ready for the actual parade. However, I also felt that our drill standard could definitely be improved, as there were still certain movements that we were not able to perform well, such as our wheeling movements. Ultimately, I am definitely excited for the upcoming Enrolment Parade, and I hope that we will be able to put up an excellent performance!

005: Parade

Parade!: 26 March 2011

In the morning, after falling in and marking attendance, a drill session was held to prepare us from the enrolment parade. We were split up into different groups to practice drill for about 45 minutes, after which we gathered at the Lecture Theatre for a talk on the mission trip in June. The speaker shared with us his experiences as a missionary in Thailand and also the importance of being convicted to help others in need and have compassion for them. We were also informed of the details of the mission trip during the talk.
When the talk ended, we were given some time to interact with our Year 2 juniors. We were split up into groups to play station games. We got to know some of the Year 2s and also had some fun as well through games such as leading a blindfolded team mate through an obstacle course while he or she dribbles a ball. The games also really reminded me that BB is one big family and that we are there to look out for one another and also to have fun.
We gathered back at the LT for Christian Education. We started off with a time of worship, followed by a video about the proofs in the Bible of Jesus’ identity as the Son of God. While watching the video, I realised the importance of truly knowing who Jesus is and not just having an impression of who He is based on what others tell us. The Year 5s then stayed back for a short briefing on LDC planning and we were dismissed after that.
